A single trade result tells you almost nothing. A good decision loses 40% of the time; a terrible one wins often enough to teach you the wrong lesson. Traders who grade themselves on OUTCOMES ride an emotional rollercoaster and learn noise. Traders who grade the PROCESS — was the setup valid, the size right, the stop honored? — improve every week regardless of the P&L.
Practices that build it
- Journal every trade with one line: setup, R risked, followed-plan yes/no. The yes/no column is your real performance.
- Name your 'bad wins' — profit taken on a broken rule. They're more dangerous than losses because they pay you to repeat the mistake.
- Think in samples of 20: no setup can be judged on fewer. One race is weather; twenty is climate.
You control three things: what you enter, how much you risk, and when you stop. Price is not on the list. Master the list.
