Joining a race mid-run, the live multiple is the market's honest price for the current position of the race. Translate it instantly: a 3.0× fill risks 1 to win 2 — a 2R trade. A 1.3× fill risks 1 to win 0.3 — you need to be right ~77% of the time just to break even. The multiplier IS the probability, inverted.
Frameworks for late entries
- The comeback entry: price near the opposing knockout, your side still alive, paying 4×+. You're buying the exhaustion/snap-back thesis (see Cascades) at longshot pricing. Small size, defined thesis, real R.
- The confirmation entry: your side ahead, paying under 1.6×. You're paying a premium for safety — justified only when the REGIME strongly favors continuation (trend day, fresh impulse).
- The dead zone: mid-race, both sides near even, ~1.9× each. You're taking window-odds without window-information. Usually the worst value on the board.
Late entry converts patience into price. The discipline: decide the thesis FIRST (trend continues / move exhausts), then check whether the quoted multiple pays that thesis fairly — never the reverse.
